Impact and Role of Mass Media in Education

In today's developed world, where everything changes at lightning speed, mass media plays an important role. With that being said, education is moving forward day by day. It is no longer confined to the four walls of the classroom. The mass media is to some extent responsible for this development. In this article we will learn about the role of mass media in education.

What is mass media?

Mass media comes in many forms.

In other words – mass media consists of tools used to spread information and ideas. It conveys information to the masses, both general and targeted.

Historically, the ability to transmit information was dependent on only a few things. They were limited to oral information and some handwritten information. As the world became more advanced and complex, so did the quality of education. Therefore, it has helped in imparting education quickly, efficiently and without geographical limitations.

As such, the old-fashioned information medium was found too unworthy to meet the technical aspects of the task. Technology has thus entered the field of education provision. In other words, different media are now available to provide information.

Mass media category

Mass media are divided into 3 categories –

Print media

Electronic media

Digital media

Print media

The oldest form of media is print media. These include books, newspapers, magazines, journals, newsletters and many more.

Electronic media

Second, we have electronic media that make information entertaining. This was possible with the help of television, radio, movies and more.

Digital media

With technology advancing by leaps and bounds, digital media has overtaken other forms of media in a way. With his help, the conversation became two-way. Digital media is a fast and efficient form of mass media. It includes all types of social media, blogs, forums, web portals and more. The role of mass media in education

Technological innovation in the mass media of educational communication means that education can now be transmitted to distant places. And that without geographical barriers. For example, a person sitting in India may benefit from a lecture in the United States. This will save a lot of time, effort and money. With ever-increasing innovations in technology, education can now be delivered in real time through a computer screen from remote locations. The main roles played by the mass media in the field of education are:

Universal reach

Mass media has made the world smaller; brings people together like never before. Education is something that must be universal. Mass media has helped tremendously in bridging this gap. In other words, it is now within everyone's reach and makes the world a better place.

Information storage

Mass media allow information to be stored that is accessible from anywhere at any time. It is available literally at your fingertips, which saves a lot of time and energy. It therefore serves as a fairly useful resource in the field of education.

No physical limitations

One of the main disadvantages before mass media was physical limitation, but not anymore. Mass media has shrunk the distance and shrunk the world forever. For example, it is not necessary to be physically present at the site to acquire knowledge now.

Organized influence

Previously, the medium of information was rather disorganized. The mass media of information now offer much more organization and sophistication in the delivery of information. In addition, the authenticity of the information transmitted can be easily checked and verified. This has the effect of reducing and eliminating false information or rumours.

Fruitful results

Another huge advantage of current technological innovations in mass media is the increased memory capacity of students. Many scientific studies have shown that the transmission of lectures through an audiovisual format is quite effective. It has a much more positive impact on the memory capacity of the brain than a simple audio lecture. Above all, this is only possible thanks to the mass media.
