 Indo-Canadian Education:

Given that the Indian language system has traditionally been different than the French and English educational systems in Canada, is it correct to say that bilingual education in Canada has contributed to a larger and more diverse set of people in our schools? If so, what are some other things we might be missing as a result?

After researching hundreds of articles and blog posts, the general consensus in most places I’ve seen is that the Indian languages are the most difficult languages to teach to English-speaking people. We have a lot of jargon and descriptions that are unique to the culture. Our education systems also focus heavily on learning proper grammar. It’s difficult for teachers to explain why these languages might be important to the students.

I find the theory that we have a more diverse and educated populace in Canada based on the number of people who have bilingual education is both oversimplistic and wrong. If that’s the case, our citizens shouldn’t be struggling to learn the language.

Education Should Be About Freedom, Not Equality:

I don’t think education is about equality. Education should be about encouraging you to be able to write well, to learn something and to follow directions that might be strange or sometimes difficult.

More than anything I think education should be about helping students develop the skills necessary to write their way out of poverty and be able to live a good life.

And if people have to learn the language of a wealthy culture in order to do that, I don’t think education is worth it.

After reading all the arguments for education as an opportunity for learning and a chance to better oneself, is the argument about equality really the best we can do?

Equality Doesn’t Always Mean Learning Other Languages:

In a certain sense, there’s not much difference between being educated in English or in Hindi. Of course people should learn both, but there’s nothing wrong with having a bilingual education in English in a world where education can be scarce.

For people who have jobs and are living comfortably in English-speaking areas, there’s not much to be gained from learning another language. For people who need education in an economy that doesn’t have the kind of education they need, it might be a good idea to learn a foreign language, but not necessarily an obligation.

Indo-Canadian Education:

It’s not true to say that those who have bilingual education are better educated. This is a generalization that leads people to believe that education is a key to happiness. But, education is more about living a better life than reaching a certain level of education.

There’s an individual in the west who has an education that’s less than most people on the east coast. At the same time, this individual has learned the language of that country very well. This individual has a job in a foreign country, does not have to deal with the complicated regulations of that country and is living a happy life.

At the same time there’s another individual in the west who has graduated from university but was struggling to find a job. They may have struggled with schooling in the beginning, but that was a struggle based on economics. With a job, they’ve reached a certain level of education. At the same time, their job situation has improved. This same individual is living a happier life because of their language ability.

If the focus of education is on living a better life rather than learning a language, then bilingual education should be seen as a chance to reach your potential.
