Characteristics of good measuring tools in education

In this topic we discuss various important tools that help in evaluating student performance. Most notably, it is divided into 3 tests, which are validity, reliability and usability.

Validity

The most important characteristic of any good test is validity. In addition, it refers to the amount in which the test fulfills its purpose. Or in other words, it describes the effectiveness with which it measures the performance it aims to measure.

This validity also tests the concerns and measures and how well they work. For example, to assess the validity of any test,it is necessary to know what the test is for. It also finds out what the purpose of the test is.If a test does not serve its true purpose even after showing a consistent score, it is invalid. Example that if class 8 is given to class 5 it is invalid.

In addition, the validity of the test is divided into 4 types:

  • Content validity – expresses the extent to which the content of the test represents the content of the course. In addition, a well-constructed test should not only contain the subject matter. But also the goal of the guidelines. In addition, its three main domains are cognitive, affective and psychomotor.
  • Concurrent validity – refers to the degree to which a test correlates with a test criterion and is  acceptable for measurement. Moreover, at the time of testing, this criterion is always available. It also introduces a statistical tool that correlates and interprets test results.
  • Predictive validity – links a student's actual performance on a test to their achievement, so we can predict the actual results. This is very useful for predicting the test provider's future results. This predicted result is also available for future use when verifying after a long period of time.
  • Construct validity – Measures a theoretical feature of a test. In addition, test items must include some mental factors such as intelligence, reading comprehension, critical thinking, or mathematical aptitude.

Reliability

The meaning of reliability is accuracy and consistency. It also refers to the extent to which the test is consistent, stable and dependent. In addition, the result in it is consistent and repeating the test will not change the result. Moreover, it gives the same result every time.

Example: Suppose a student gets a 70 on a math paper on Wednesday. And next Wednesday in the same test he scores 25, then we cannot rely on this data.

In addition, the inconsistency of the result of one test limits and affects the person's score. In addition, it limits the samples to certain subject areas. The examinee's disturbed mind also affects his score.

Usability

It refers to the extent to which the test can be used without a large expenditure of money and time. Most notably, it means practicality. In addition, there are certain factors that determine usability, which we have mentioned below.

Administerability – Means that the test can be administered in a comprehensible, easy and uniform manner. The direction is also simple, concise and clear. In addition, it sets a time limit, sample questions, and verbal instructions. The reserve for test material is definitive.

Scorability- refers to the test score. A good test is also easy to get. Scoring direction, scoring key is simple and answer is available. Most notably, test scores are useful for evaluating students.
